Where is it? ….it’s invisible and it’s everywhere…
2020
6B graphite pencil, colored pencil, crayola crayon
38.5" x 21.5"

We began this drawing while I finished my self-portrait. I say we because my son and I collaborated on this portrait. He determined his facial expression and where the virus would be and at what scale.

Finding ways to have agency these days is key for all of us.

This was the first time we have drawn a portrait together in this way. I can see his state of being through his marks, and I can see mine. When we worked on the hair together, he was patient, calm, gentle. When he worked on his half of the shirt he was full of fury and movement AND he did it alone when I wasn’t present.

The title is inspired by our discussions surrounding the coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic (early which was really only a matter of weeks ago, but feels like years some days). He said something to the effect of: I want the virus to be bigger than me because it’s invisible and we don’t really know where it is.

Here’s to finding your agency in small ways right now, cheers.
